BSCI, BEPI, FSC and EUDR Explained

Understand the distinct roles of BSCI social responsibility, BEPI environmental performance, FSC responsible forestry and paper supply chains, and the EUDR regulation.

These terms appear together in sourcing discussions but they address different subjects. They should not be presented as interchangeable certificates.

BSCI: social responsibility

amfori BSCI is a social performance monitoring and improvement framework for supply chains. It focuses on workplace and labor-related practices through a defined assessment system.

BEPI: environmental performance

amfori BEPI supports assessment and improvement of environmental performance in supply chains. Its scope is environmental management, distinct from BSCI’s social focus.

FSC: responsible forestry and chain of custody

FSC relates to responsible forest management and verified supply chains for forest-based materials. In a balloon program, it is most relevant to paper components such as cards, inserts, boxes or cartons when those components are within certified scope.

EUDR: a regulation

The EU Deforestation Regulation is legislation with due-diligence obligations for relevant commodities and products placed on or exported from the EU market. EUDR is not an “upgrade” to FSC. Certification may support information and risk-management processes, but legal applicability and compliance must be assessed independently.

Procurement tip: Verify the current audit or certificate holder, site, scope, validity and chain-of-custody claims before printing any mark or claim on packaging.
